Bible Literacy: From Honoring the Book to Engaging the Word
The courtroom battles and culture skirmishes over the placement of the Scriptures in prominent places may be missing the bigger picture: Bible literacy in American society appears to be waning. What’s at stake is a culture that’s gradually losing a rootedness in Scripture. Not just reverence for the Word of God, but even a basic knowledge of the tenets of the Bible that were once a shared source of wisdom, morality, and norms. Without slipping into a nostalgia for a rosier time in history, let’s examine how to elevate the Bible – its beauty in language, power in truth, and story of salvation. How might we encourage and entice a skeptical secular society that there’s value in learning the truths and stories in the Bible, and engage our fellow believers in etching the Scriptures in our hearts, not just posting on the walls of buildings?
